Celebration

We as a state should celebrate our heritage in the birth of our nation and Virginia as "the mother of presidents."  That is a term that you never really hear in reference to Virginia anymore.  If we teach the love of freedom and constitutionalism to our children, then they will always value their liberty.  If not, it has been said that he who fails to study history is doomed to repeat it's mistakes.  I do not want to repeat ANY mistake that could put freedom in danger.

Protect Freedom of Speech

How about the State election commission not attempt to abridge freedom of speech by allowing voters to wear whatever campaign related clothing items they wish on election day?  Under the existing law, you can be turned away from the polls if you attempt to vote wearing ANYTHING campaign related.  This includes hats, buttons, shits, etc..  PROTECT YOUR FREEDOM!

State Taxation Reform

So why don't we as a state, switch to a flat tax rate of 17.5% on all consumer puchases to provide all state revenue.  This is the same system and tax rate that is already in practice in England.  There it is referred to as the Value Added Tax or VAT for short.  It is fiscally responsible and fair because it is the same rate for everyone.  Additionally, it has the added benefit of allowing citizens to keep more of their paychecks.  This would also dramatically reduce the size and expenditures of the state budget because it will allow us to do away with the Virginia

What is Virginia doing about its loss of Sovereignty ?

This question comes from something that the ACLU has posted, the formation of "Constitution Free Zones"  (Link).  According to the map half of Virginia will fall under Federal control - will the State be split, half living under the Constitution of the United States the other half subjects of imperial rule ?

Tax Relief for Senior Citizens and Disabled Persons - Making the Program Work for Everyone

Introduction

The Commonwealth of Virginia has on its books a program that seems at first glance to offer tax relief for Senior Citizens and Disabled Persons. It's a noble idea, but needs basic changes to make it workable for people who really need the tax relief it seems to offer.

Freeze Contract Escalations

In the current budget environment, state employees are not receiving cost of living adjustments to offset the impacts of inflation.  Hold state contracts to the same standard that we are holding employees.   In other words,  For multi-year contracts that allow cost escalations (these escalations are usually based on the percentage change in the applicable Consumer Price Index), don't increase the contract price.   This will save the Commonwealth money in the short term which is the immediate need.

Permanent Open Space Easements on Land – Making Them Work for Everyone

Introduction

Having owned land that is protected by easement for about 13-years, I would like to propose several changes that should make the program work a lot better for all involved.

The only beneficiaries of this program are the original grantor/s of the easement, by virtue income tax deductions based on the devaluation of the property. All subsequent owners get no benefits at all.

Early Voting at the Polls (in Person)

Currently Virginia offers absentee ballots for citizens who will not be in the area on election day and mail in ballots for those unable to get to the polls. Our Commonweath does not have an early voting opportunity at the polling place to allow citizens greater opportunity for participation.
