It may be too late know but if VA were to raise the gas tax slowly as gas prices continue to fall, we could increase revenue. It should only be raised by a fraction of the price decrease. For example, if the state average price falls 10 cents in a week, increase the gas tax by 5 cents. Residents would still see prices fall AND we would still recieve tax revenues. This money should be directly earmarked to benefit the city/county that it is collected in. For regions (i.e Hampton Roads, Northern VA, Richmond Area, etc), however, the money should benefit the region as a whole.

Over the course of the last century, the automobile has greatly facilitated the development of suburbs, long commutes and sprawl. This has had major and damaging impacts on old urban core areas, especially in Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia. This sprawl and flight from center cities and massive daily movement of people on Virginia's highways needs to be mitgated somehow, if not actively reversed, in areas of greatest population density. Big solution for the state: Get Rid of State Income Tax Go to Sales Tax only for revenue, increase to 8-9%, put cap on it so state government cant get too greedy in the future, which we all know will happen. All the money that normally goes to the state for income tax, most people will spend it which will boost state economy. Business owners will relocate here to avoid tax in their state, with their relocation they will birng jobs. (19 votes) |
