Personally, I'm not

Personally, I'm not convinced that this would save money.    Can you outline the proposal in a little more detail ?  If someone retires at 50, and start collecting retirement early, is the amount they are collecting less than the difference between their current pay, and the salary of the person that replaces them?

How to Save Money

Please stay

I think the experience of older workers is invaluable.  They've "been there and done that" and have a lot to share with younger, less experienced employees.  I don't think we should pay to have them leave.

Early Retirement

Though Lswallen makes an excellent point, I feel like early retirement would be a great thing.  I personally work with co-workers that are within a couple of years of being able to retire.  These people come into work daily in a funk because they do not want to be there.  It makes for a  hostile working environment.  The reason that these people stay is mainly because they can not afford to retire.  Not to mention that they are not going to be eligible Medicare until 65.  Most of my co-workers have major medical problems and paying for private insurance would be out of the question.  This is also why people who are passed their prime on retirement are still working.

My Mother was a state employee for 32 years, she was forced to retire because of cancer.  It was a financial blessing that she passed shortly after retirement because she did not have much in her retirement account to show for her 32 years of  hard work. The money that she had would not have lasted one year with medical expenses.  One nowadays can not soley rely on VRS to get one through their golden years.

offering early retirement

Yes they offered early retirement and so many employees took the option that the government almost shut down.  They had to go back and rehire many of them as consultants at a much higher wage.  Early outs didn't work then and won't work now.  What will you say when offices like DMV and others close because there are no employees.  Let's get rid of the fat programs and quit blaming the budget crunch on the employees.  Put it where it belongs on the Administration and the General Assembly for spending more than they take in.  Eliminate all but the essential programs of Safety, Transportation, and Education.  Close all the agencies that are not mandated by state law and quit spendiing unless it is mandated by the same laws and federal mandates.  Guess who would save money then?  Lets get real people.

Please Resign and give the

Please Resign and give the people back the money that we spend on your wages.  It is time for our System to learn to make Money to pay their Own Pay check and Learn to Give back to the People that are Now Paying you.  I do not get a Retirement from my JOB.  I will be lucky if it last 10 years.  A Majority of the Jobs are being sent out of  Virginia to other countries or other States.  My Company has Reduced the amount of hours I work in a week.  I do generate income for them.  What do you Generate?  To us "The People:" it looks like you generate more expenses and have no clue how to bring additional income in to the state "unless" you raise my taxes to supply you and your staff with vacation pay, benifits, retirement.  Come on wake up we are tired of paying you.  I would love to have you resign better yet I would love just to Fire all of you and start all over.

I'm sorry you feel that

I'm sorry you feel that way.  I have been an employee of the state for about 40 years.  My pay is not much compared to private industry but the benefit of a retirement plan makes up for the lack of a higher wage.  I make about 35 to 40 percent of what a person in private industry would make doing the same job.

Offering a early retirement

Offering a early retirement for state employees would save the VA goverment a lot of money, Instead of people working to 65 years old and getting more money from the VA retirement because there income will be going up each year, giving them a opportunity to leave earlier would save the government money because they may not replace the  position that is vacated or hire younger people for less money. The state offered this about 10 years ago and it increased the economy greatly.
