Many localities have chosen to do away with their county windshield stickers. They were/are a pain to put on and a pain to take off. It is time to do the same with the annual inspection sticker. Most inspection stations can't get them on straight and leave a mess when they take them off. Instead, place two small stickers with the month and year at the bottom of the license plate (the same as the registration expiration stickers on the top of the plate). No more window stickers!

Response from state government
Secretary of Public Safety
The inspection sticker placed on the windshield of a vehicle has two purposes; the first being a visual reminder for the vehicle owner of the inspection expiration and secondly, it’s easily identifiable for enforcement.

This was a fun adventure.. A couple weekends ago, a police officer issued a warning for my expired State Inspection sticker. I dutifully took the car in for inspection, and they replaced my sticker.
Just recently, I was watching my photos go by via my FlickR screensaver and saw a picture go by that revealed an inspiection sticker that expires several months in the future from now!
So I did a little research on FlickR to pull up any other photos where my inspection stickers might appear and came across two images that together show my expired 12/06 stickers.
A little head-scratching and research later, I came to the conclusion that on that particular, icy day in January above, I was actually driving my wife's car. The reason: it was parked in the garage over night, and my car was iced over...
OOoops! :D

This is how we used to do it in Florida. The inspection people can't even get the stupid stickers on correctly, and god forbid if you try and do it yourself. Meh.

Inspection stickers needed
I think this is a good suggestion, but weigh all options. If we eliminate the inspection sticker, who's going to inspect your vehicle and ensure it's safe? People are cutting costs and would do anything to get by without putting brake shoes on their car. Will the city or state inspect these vehicles? The dealer? I hope not. Your local inspection station does a good service of keeping our roads safe by making sure your car is safe. Need more debate on this one!

So, how many hundreds of dollars will this save. This sounds like taxpayer convenience.

color:black">I think it is an excellent idea to move away from the window sticker. I sure that an alternative method of identifying if a car has been inspected can be created. I find it interesting that of all of the windows that the stickers are supposed to be on, the windshield is used and it is the most likely to be replaced if damaged. I think that moving the sticker to somewhere on the License plate is a good idea, but I am not sure that DMV needs to be responsible for the actual inspection as someone mentioned previously. Just a space designated for the sticker would probably suffice.
color:black">At the very least, making the stickers smaller would save on some of the cost of creating them...you would think.
color:black">Who is this sticker for exactly? Law enforcement? Perhaps all that is needed is the "record" that the citizen performed the inspection is what we are looking for. When an officer looks up the License plate, perhaps it could indicate that the inspection was completed (turn the written information into data). The inspection stations could just enter their inspections into a system and that information could be ported into the Law Enforcement information. If we were looking for a way to remember when to get your state inspection done, perhaps we could just use the birth month of the person who registered the car. That would make it easier.

Combining your vehicle renewal with an inspection is a can of worms most people wouldn't want to get into. Is the DMV going to do the inspection, or is your friendly inspection station going to renew your registration? Also, if I buy a car from my neighbor, and he just had it inspected 2 months ago, do I have to get a new inspection when I get the new tags for the car, even though it has 10 months left on the sticker?
Agree with evadsti
Combine the annual inspection with the registration renewal. That way if your plate stickers are up to date then you konw that state and county taxes are paid and the car is fully inspected. Just one place to look.

you may have something there.....
interesting
That is actually a great idea. It would also deter people from driving with uninspected vehicles
Agreed!!
Agreed!!
Too Easy
I agree that window stickers are a nuisance, especially when they have to put them in the middle of the windshield. If you were going to move it to the license plate, why not combine license plate renewal with inspections? Your annual sticker would also be your inspection sticker.
other solutions
I think we can find a better way rather than using stickers. I hate having my windshield filled with these sticky things. Do they even know how much is a windshield replacement these days ? Until we find another solution i guess were stuck with stickers.
State Inspection Stickers
This is a great idea and has been debated in PWC. I think the county tax sticker should also be placed with the tags where applicable as well. Think of the postage saved not to mention the cost of employee time and sticker cost.
